Red Light, Green Light

Thursday Threesome, from The Back Porch

Onesome: Red

…candles for Valentine’s Day? Are you decorating this year? Planning? Scheming? Deferring?

No particular plans, no decorating (why decorate for a one-day holiday that doesn’t last a whole season?), no schemes. I’ll make hubby a nice card. He might remember the occasion. :)

Twosome: Light, Green

…or would that be ‘teal’? What color is your kitchen area? What color should it be ?

My kitchen cabinets are an unhealthy shade of green (if they were a person, I’d have called 911 ages ago), the walls are covered with some acceptable wallpaper, the floors are yellow linoleum (that has to go!) and the appliances are black. I’m going to paint the cabinets white (they’re metal) one of these days. A white-ish tiled floor would be nice, too, but way more trouble that I care to encounter.

Threesome: Light

…up the place and save energy with these newer CFL/twisty bulbs? Have you tried any yet? How are they working out?

Yes, I use the CFL/twisty bulbs in pretty much all the places I can. For the most part, they’re working out fine… though they are dimmer than the incandescent ones.

Friday’s Feast

Another interesting meme I’ve come across! This is week 178. Can you believe it?

Appetizer
What is your favorite kind of cereal? If I were to go back to consuming regular milk, it would be Cinnamon Crunch. But that’s a little odd with soy milk, so Cheerios are fine.

Soup
When was the last time you purchased something for your home, what was it, and in which room did it go? Oooh! That’s easy! It was a new bath mat. For the bathroom, because not many people I know put them anywhere else.

Salad
What is the funniest commercial you’ve ever seen? Probably any of the 9 Lives commercials with Morris the Cat. He was a lolcat before lolcats.

Main Course
Make up a name for a company by using a spice and an animal (example: Cinnamon Monkey). Clove Cobra.

Dessert
Fill in the blank: I haven’t ______ since ______. In honor of the madness this weekend, I haven’t watched the Super Bowl from kick off to the end of the game since I some time in the early 70s.

Thinking Warm Thoughts

a meme from Five on Fridays

1. What is your favorite hot beverage? Chai. Used to be, I thought the idea of putting milk in tea was totally horrifying. In an EWWWWW kind of way. But once I tried it, I was hooked!

2. Describe your favorite hot food? It depends. Do I have to make it, or is someone going to bring it to me? If I have to make it, my favorite hot food would be Sloppy Joes (my mother’s recipe). If someone is bringing it to me, it would be Giordano’s stuff pizza with onions and green peppers.

3. What piece of clothing makes you feel warm and snuggly the moment you put it on? My down coat. Is that weird?

4. Do you warm up your car on cold days? Do you run the heat all the time or just enough to defrost the windows? Lately, I’ve been thinking I should, but mostly I don’t. In average traffic, it only takes about 10 minutes to get to work. But since I hate being cold, I keep the heat on (though I might turn the fan down a little). People who actually have blood in their veins instead of water hate driving with me.

5. What is your ideal warm-weather vacation spot? I think I’d opt for Arizona. It’s warm, it’s try and there aren’t an overabundance of people. I have family there, I have friends there. It’s good.

5 Book Meme

I’m finding there are some of these that are really fun! This one is called the 5-Book Meme, where you grab a sentence from each of five books and turn them into a paragraph. Here’s my paragraph:

The back of the table captain’s cream-colored evening jacket had just turned away when Stephen Hopkins leaned across the secluded corner booth and kissed his wife. All of Jambudvipa became confused and agitated, as dark as smoke, with meteor showers burning in all directions, and divine kettledrums resounding in the sky. “Who the hell do you think you are?” Sully twirled a forkful of linguine. “May you be as tormented in your death as I am in my life.”

I’m going to have to do this one regularly, because it just cracks me up. The five books I used are:

  1. Step on a Crack by James Patterson and Michael Ledwidge (to be read)
  2. Buddhist Scriptures edited by Donald S. Lopez, Jr. (reading)
  3. Firestorm by Rachael Caine (to be read)
  4. Nobody’s Fool by Richard Russo (reading)
  5. If You Can’t Say Anything Nice, Say It In Yiddish by Lita Epstein (reading)

My New Years Resolutions

Psych!

I don’t make resolutions any more. Why bother? It’s a set up for a let down, if you ask me. Why say I’m going to exercise every day, when I know I’m not going to go out of my way to exercise until the weather turns nice again? Why say I’m going to lose weight when that would involve more deprivation than I’m already getting being a vegan? (Ok, I do need to lose weight… but I have to convince myself I really want to do it because I can make any kind of commitment to the process.) (And the deprivation of being a vegan isn’t really all that much, except I can’t eat the kind of pizza I love — deep dish Chicago-style pizza.)

(By the way, did you ever notice that the word resolution can be seen as re-solution? That seems to imply that a resolution is the application of a solution for a second, third, nth time. Words are fun, aren’t they?)

I have noticed, however, that I’ve ignore this little corner of cyberspace of nine months. Good grief, that’s enough time to gestate a human being. Thank all the gods and goddesses and superheroes that hasn’t been what I’ve been doing. Not that it would have been possible, but still. Apparently, I haven’t had much to rant about.

What I am going to do is commit to writing a blog post every day, for at least the next two weeks. That doesn’t mean it’s going to be here. I do have other blogs, you know. And in case you don’t know, the other blogs are Aerten Art and Aerten Caisleán (where I talk about my art and books I’ve read, respectively).

Here, I’m not necessarily going to rant any more. Perhaps (most likely) I will write something in response to someone else’s blog. I read a lot of blogs, and a lot of those blogs are thought-provoking. Perhaps, as I did last April, I will create a post in response to a meme. You just never know.

So stay tuned.

Top 100 Movies

Was wandering around on the internet and discovered The Daily Meme, where I tripped over a one-time meme for indicating the top 100 movies from the IMDb database and highlighting the ones you’ve seen. How could I possibly resist? No, really… after seeing something like this, is there anyone out there who thinks I could not post my own list? I’ve added the year of release because some of them have been remade. The ones I’ve seen are bolded… 75 out of 100. Not bad. More movies to add to my Netflix queue.

(More movies bolded on 1/22/08. I’ve seen 77 out of 100.)
