Fall Is Falling

NaBloPoMo Day 7

I had to pop a couple of things in the mailbox last night and noticed that it smelled like it was going to snow outside.  Back when I lived in Chicago and Denver, when I’d say something like that I’d see most heads nodding and maybe one or two people shaking their heads and rolling their eyes and claiming that a person couldn’t smell snow.  But since moving to Smalbany, most people seem to think I’m nuts when I say that.  What?  People in New York can’t tell snow is coming by sniffing the air?  Are you kidding me?  I’ll bet the folks up in Buffalo and in western New York can smell snow!

Thankfully, when I got up this morning I didn’t notice any snow outside.  There was more frost than I’d seen in the past several days, but that was it.  I’m not at all happy with snow anymore, so if it wanted to stay outside the Capital District this year, I wouldn’t mind.

I don’t know about smelling it (I know I can smell rain, not so sure about snow), but I can tell snow by the clouds. Having driving the Thruway from Amsterdam past Rochester for 5 years to college, I can tell where there’s snow ahead, and dread it every time. On a smaller scale it is the same on my Vermont commute through the Winooski River valley and the “Bolton Flats” on a daily basis.

Had frost this morning too. :/ Sun’s out though, that’s a rare fall/winter occurrence.

Oh, yes… I smell rain, too. But my joints tell me about it before my nose does, so it’s merely confirmation.

I used to love watching the storm clouds when I lived in Colorado. Ahh… sure do miss them!
