Chicken Soup

from Five on Friday

How often do you get sick with a cold? The flu? Something else?
Not often, really. Once a year maybe.

Are you the sort of person who goes to work or school no matter how sick you are, or are you willing to stay at home when it gets bad?
I used to play the martyr and go to work no matter what. Now, though… if I’m sicking, I’m staying home. I get to rest, so I feel better sooner, and my coworkers thank me for not sharing all my germs.

How do you like to treat a cold? What remedies do you like and why?
I dose myself up with lots of garlic… liquid garlic in capsules… and extra Vitamin C. If I find I can’t breathe at night, I’ll resort to NyQuil. I don’t like to take it because it makes me feel groggy all morning, plus it gives me bizarre dreams that I (unfortunately) tend to remember.

What do you do to keep from getting sick in the winter?
Eat healthy, take my vitamins, wash my hands a lot, and try to stay out of sneezing and coughing range of sick people.

What is your favorite thing to do when you stay home from work or school?

Red Light, Green Light

Thursday Threesome, from The Back Porch

Onesome: Red

…candles for Valentine’s Day? Are you decorating this year? Planning? Scheming? Deferring?

No particular plans, no decorating (why decorate for a one-day holiday that doesn’t last a whole season?), no schemes. I’ll make hubby a nice card. He might remember the occasion. :)

Twosome: Light, Green

…or would that be ‘teal’? What color is your kitchen area? What color should it be ?

My kitchen cabinets are an unhealthy shade of green (if they were a person, I’d have called 911 ages ago), the walls are covered with some acceptable wallpaper, the floors are yellow linoleum (that has to go!) and the appliances are black. I’m going to paint the cabinets white (they’re metal) one of these days. A white-ish tiled floor would be nice, too, but way more trouble that I care to encounter.

Threesome: Light

…up the place and save energy with these newer CFL/twisty bulbs? Have you tried any yet? How are they working out?

Yes, I use the CFL/twisty bulbs in pretty much all the places I can. For the most part, they’re working out fine… though they are dimmer than the incandescent ones.

Super Tuesday

So, tomorrow is voting day here in New York. And as I mentioned to one of my friends this evening, I have never — in my entire life of nearly 50 years — been so apathetic about voting. And that distresses me.

Just before sitting down to write this, I was visiting uuMomma‘s site. She excited and hopeful, and wishes she could be voting tomorrow too. Truth be told, I’m a bit jealous of the enthusiasm.

I’m pretty sure I’ve taken every quiz out here on the internet about who my candidate is. It’s all very consistent… either Dennis Kucinich or Mike Gravel. But look at the way the pollsters have decided the election for us… we have a choice between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama.

Don’t get me wrong. I don’t completely hate either one of them. Hillary is smart… maybe too smart for her own good. Barack is… well, hope-full. But neither one really grabs me, you know?

Not that Kucinich or Gravel do, either, but at least they match up better with the issues that are important to ME. And neither of them stands a snowball’s chance in hell. Sigh.

Oh… what about the Republicans, you say? Well, let’s just say I’m an Irish person from Chicago and leave it at that, shall we? Hey! How about Jane Byrne for president!

And now that I’ve had my little talking to here, I’ll go vote my conscience tomorrow. And I’ll be thinking about uuMomma when I go.

Friday’s Feast

Another interesting meme I’ve come across! This is week 178. Can you believe it?

What is your favorite kind of cereal? If I were to go back to consuming regular milk, it would be Cinnamon Crunch. But that’s a little odd with soy milk, so Cheerios are fine.

When was the last time you purchased something for your home, what was it, and in which room did it go? Oooh! That’s easy! It was a new bath mat. For the bathroom, because not many people I know put them anywhere else.

What is the funniest commercial you’ve ever seen? Probably any of the 9 Lives commercials with Morris the Cat. He was a lolcat before lolcats.

Main Course
Make up a name for a company by using a spice and an animal (example: Cinnamon Monkey). Clove Cobra.

Fill in the blank: I haven’t ______ since ______. In honor of the madness this weekend, I haven’t watched the Super Bowl from kick off to the end of the game since I some time in the early 70s.
